About Tip calculator

This tip calculator makes it quick to work out a gratuity at a restaurant, bar, salon or for delivery. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people, and see the tip, the total and how much each person pays.

In the United States, a tip of 15–20% is customary for table service, with 20% or more for excellent service. In Canada it is similar, while in the UK a 10–12.5% service charge is common and is often already included on the bill — check your receipt before tipping.

Split the bill

Shares the bill and tip evenly between any number of people.

Tip before tax

Optionally tip on the pre-tax amount, as many etiquette guides suggest.

Round up

Rounds each share up to a whole amount, with the extra going to the tip.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. For $86.40, 10% is $8.64, so 20% is $17.28.

How much should I tip in the US?

15–20% for restaurant table service, around 15–20% for hairdressers and delivery, and $1–2 per drink at a bar.

Should I tip on the total or before tax?

Etiquette guides often suggest tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. Both options are available.

How do I split a bill evenly?

Add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people. The calculator does this for you.

Is service included in the UK?

Often yes — many UK restaurants add a 12.5% discretionary service charge. If it is on the bill, there is no need to tip again.
