About BMR calculator

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to keep you alive at complete rest — breathing, circulating blood and repairing cells. It usually makes up 60–70% of the calories you burn each day. This BMR calculator estimates it with two well-known equations.

Your BMR depends mainly on your size, age and sex: larger bodies and more muscle burn more, and BMR slowly falls with age. Multiply your BMR by an activity factor to get the calories you need each day, shown in the table below the result.

Frequently asked questions

What is BMR?

Basal metabolic rate — the calories your body burns at rest to keep basic functions running.

How is BMR calculated?

Mifflin-St Jeor: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age, plus 5 for men or minus 161 for women.

What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?

BMR is calories at rest. TDEE adds the energy you use moving and exercising, so it is always higher.

How can I increase my BMR?

Building muscle through strength training raises BMR, as muscle burns more energy than fat even at rest.

Is this medical advice?

No. Estimates can differ from a measured metabolic rate.
