About Gravel calculator
This gravel calculator works out the volume of gravel for a driveway, path, patio base or drainage area and converts it to tons using the material’s density. Most gravel and crushed stone weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, which is the default; you can change it for other materials.
Driveways usually need 4–6 inches of gravel, often in layers of larger base stone topped with finer gravel, while decorative paths need about 2–3 inches. Order a little extra for compaction and uneven ground.
Tons and cubic yards
Quarries sell by the ton, landscape yards often by the yard — you get both.
Adjustable density
Change the density for pea gravel, crushed stone, river rock or base material.
Cost estimate
Add the price per ton to budget your project.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate how much gravel I need?
Multiply length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) to get cubic feet, divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by the density (about 1.4) for tons.
How much does a yard of gravel weigh?
About 1.4 tons (2,800 lb) for most gravel and crushed stone, depending on the rock and moisture.
How deep should a gravel driveway be?
At least 4 inches, and 6–8 inches in total for new driveways built in layers.
How much area does a ton of gravel cover?
At 2 inches deep, about 100 sq ft; at 4 inches, about 50 sq ft.
Should I add extra?
Yes — around 5–10% to allow for compaction and spreading.
